Shed Media contacted HacDC about a Television show on January 14 2015.
* Spoke to Shed Media about their interest in HacDC for a reality/educational television show on Feb 3 2015.
* Shed Media develops concepts for TV shows and sells them to networks and they want to explore a Mythbusters-type show (6-8 episodes about the same space) on Hacker/Makerspaces. They want to show interesting people making cool things in a way that will be entertaining and educational to viewers.
* They got our name from Mitch? at Noisebridge (San Francisco) and are talking to other spaces. I also gave them the names of Reverse Space, Unallocated Space, and Baltimore Node.
* If this goes all the way, it will require a large and long time investment by those involved and will be a huge disruption on the space for the duration of the project. However, the space and the people involved will make some money.
* The next step is for interested people to talk to Shed Media.

Thusfar, no one has expressed an interest in participating. If I don't see/hear from anyone by the end of the week, I will tell Shed Media that HacDC is not interested.

There was an error in the Financials spreadsheet during the record transfer of Earmarked accounts from 2014 to 2015 that resulted in the cancellation of an order from Amazon being cancelled due to what seemed like insufficient funding. That error has been corrected and is reflected in the current Earmarked account statement.

Teaching for Change made a donation to HacDC for $150 after a member, ITechGeek, stopped by and helped them sort out their phone lines.
Julia (Juri) has requested some parts for the giant robot being built on the optical table downstairs. It has been stalled due to our recent funding woes. The current need for the project downstairs are at least 24 V-wheels from open build. They are $3.50 each. If anyone would like to either purchase the whole lot or sponsor a few of those wheels please send an email to the members list.
Also, If anyone has any supplies from Amazon, that need to be ordered please shoot treasurer@hacdc.org an email. There is a Project Supplies order that doesn't meet the minimum purchase for shipping requirement at the moment.

The internet security workshop was January 24. About half of the 40+ RSVPs attended. Not sure if it resulted in any new memberships but several attendees said they would stop by later to check out the space. We covered a lot of good topics and went from about 3:45 to 8pm and then stayed about another hour after that discussing more. Thanks to Xavier for several topics he covered. See email for other details. He has put his slides online and I haven't gotten around to cleaning them up yet, so they aren't online yet.

I stopped by NoVA Labs recently to check out what they're doing. They're still in the process of moving to a very large space. Their front room is more or less finished but the classroom, kitchen, workshop, laser cutter room and more are still under construction. They have both a large CNC and a laser cutter but both are offline for now / still being installed. The workshop area is huge (they advertise 10,000sqft total, so about 10 times our upstairs space). They also have office space for about 5 incubator / start-up companies which are all currently rented out and serve as a source of income. The companies benefit from access to the space. I was told their membership is about 60 but they have a tiered structure so I'm not sure if that referred to $100/mo full membership or the $50/mo associate level (which we basically give away for free). They still have a negative cashflow, especially with the new construction. They also have a policy that nomination and fees are not enough to warrant membership; they expect some contribution to the organization first. They also charge cost-recovery fees for large tools like the laser cutter and CNC. Might be worth comparing/contrasting the two organizations to see if we can learn anything from each other.

Would like to run for the Vice President position. Wrapping up a major project soon, and seems time I committed more time to HacDC's educational and technological missions.

Please, do not introduce food or finger grease to the 3D printer glass. Some unknown contaminant has proven extremely tough to remove from the glass. Additionally, the extruder is also dripping oil, suggesting ongoing contamination upstream. This is more recent, and definitely unrelated to, any CNC mill oiling.

Although delayed a few weeks by another project, the RFID reader system is still underway. Have just constructed a new workbench at home, which should greatly improve my ability to clear off projects like this.

We gained Gary Sparkes (Hunter) as a new member, re-gained Ann Millspaugh as a returning member, and lost Christine Prefontaine and Phillip Walker. We have 44 dues-paying members in good standing and 6 dues-waived members.

The CFC charity application is proving non-trivial to complete. By January 23 we must, in addition to the forms completed thus far:

We've had some debate over how to approach HacDC's funding and financing. "I want everyone to think about one thing that they personally can do to help HacDC generate revenue."

** The internet upgrade (71/15 + 3/3) is for the whole church (10+ other tennants) not just us. We need to keep our outbound traffic to a normal (for us) level once it's in. We need to at least get a baseline of "normal" useage before we get to pounding out the packets to the internet. So hosting websites and other services to the outside world won't happen until we're confident of how much bandwidth "normal" useage entials. I don't expect that we will need to be super stingy on the upload bandwidth but we need to know that "normal" isn't being squished by us running remote desktop protocols and webservers and proxies. Meaning quality of service for the other tennants isn't being unduely restricted by our using a disproportionate amount of upload bandwidth from the start.
** The front table isn't a good place to leave random things it's supposed to be there to display '''our''' propaganda.

* CAT6 has been run for several things around the space.
*** 3D printer station machine (the cube is directly under the switch so we didn't run one for that)

*** Clear modem (we have a plan for load alancing between the church and clear within the space)
*** Ham Desk (includes remote access for the wifi gear on the roof)
** There will be more but we know these things will be on the wired network so we ran cables for them. They are not mounted because we had a miscommunication about the available mounting options. We want for it to be in conduit but we were hoping to do that when the AC electrical is upgraded to coordinate the conduit selection. We didn't have a chance to crimp them all before leaving. Feel free to crimp (type A wire order) and test them tonight. There is a diagram on the crimper and we have ezcrimp terminators. El Presidente can give access to those materials which are on lone from ITechGeek.
** If you want network ports anywhere in particular in the space, email [mailto:admin+icanhazjack@hacdc.org?subject=icanhazjack admin+icanhazjack@hacdc.org] and we'll take those requests into account when we run more cables.
* We have one of the switches donated by Ahmed on the second to top shelf of the set over the main workbench in the workroom. Please try to not unplug it for too long or unplug any network cables from it. It is a smart switch and the ports in use are mapped to VLANs some of those VLANs are setup to restrict access to various things (like the mesh and ham radios from the the greater church network). The other switch donated by Ahmed is in the network closet of the church and is the switch distributing internet to the rest of the church.
* There is another gigabit smart switch we wanted to put in the basement for servers down there. It is currently MIA and help finding it would be appreciated. It is a dark blue, half depth rackmount, Trednet or Netgear. If you know where it went or where in the basement it got too please email [mailto:admin@hacdc.org?subject=found%20network%20switch admin@hacdc.org].

I purchased a house this past Wednesday, so I'm busy and not at HacDC tonight.

I updated the members@ list with the latest regarding the Hac<b>k</b>DC situation. I will continue to pursue this issue as discussed with the rest of BoD.

The OpenPGP Card group order has arrived. I will bring the cards/readers to the Cryptoparty for people to collect their share. If you need it sooner, you'll need to schedule with me.

I have new signs for the bathrooms, but since I haven't been to the space in over two weeks I haven't had a chance to put them up. Next time I'm there I'll get them installed.

I also made ten copies of the space key, because we ran out last month, but as I haven't been to the space they're not in the BoD locker yet.

While I'm buying stuff for my house, I'll also pick up a replacement door handle for the pirate bathroom.

If there's anything else, you can call me up, but my phone currently gets no service in my new basement so don't be offended if I don't pick up, it probably means my phone didn't ring.

Finally designed the [[OpticalTableRobot]]. Similar to the FlexReplicator, supports multiple tools simultaneously. However, this platform is far more rigid (absolute accuracy expected to be <2um across the ~8'x4' work area). Surprisingly, it is also cheaper than a FlexReplicator, thanks to the free table and extrusions.

Julia Longtin has successfully sought investors, and plans to use the robot to manufacture large car parts.

We will need to rent/borrow a truck (ideally one with a lift-gate) to transport it up to HacDC, and we'll need several strong volunteers to help us load, and unload the truck (including bringing it up the stairs and into the workshop). Dan: Optical maintenance; cleaning lenses, tightening things, etc. Found the aluminum track is wearing and has some play. Will try to flip them to use the other side, otherwise will purchase new tracks. This is expected, normal wear.
Aiming laser and combining optic is here, but dust is still a problem. Will add air flushing to all optical components.
Thanks to those who worked on the alignment.
The idea of having jigs underneath is being put off. The cabinet will need to be reworked first.

In preparation for the 2014 Summer School session, Project KITBUILD foresees a related kit build for rookies in late June or mid-July. Because Summer School participants are required to buy their own supplies, none, or little, of Project KITBUILD's funds would be used unless soldering irons need mending or more power strips are needed.

It would be fun to have a more advanced kit build before or around that time. More on this under New Business.

USASEF was absolutely awesome. We had several demos, including Dan Barlow's plotter, a logic analyzer, some amateur radio equipment, possibly a working byzantium node, Dan Barlow's HeNe laser projector, and my own working [[:Category:BiosignalAmplifier]]. Our table was by far the best staffed and best equipped of any local hackerspaces.

Travis picked up a free Cube printer from 3DSystems. Hopefully, this 'appliance' 3D printer will help guarantee we have an operational printer at all times.

After making contact in person, and proceeding with some follow-up, SeeMeCNC shipped us a free Rostock Max kit, the absolute best-value printer on the market. Julia Longtin is taking care of assembly for that printer, as well as Shawn Wilson's own Rostock Max.

Modified an EEPROM timed UV exposure box, laser cut new PCB exposure jig, and improved software toolchain. Have now fabricated full-scale high-resolution PCBs suitable for complex circuits.

Practice is required to evenly develop/etch the PCBs. Follow the tips at [[:Category:Photolithography_PCB_Fab]] .

Two members lost valuable cleanup time straitening out work surfaces. That time could otherwise have been used to free up more space instead. Because Summer School participants are required to buy their own supplies, none, or little, of Project KITBUILD's funds would be used unless soldering irons need mending or more power strips are needed.

It would be fun to have a more advanced kit build before or around that time. More on this under New Business.

USASEF was absolutely awesome. We had several demos, including Dan Barlow's plotter, a logic analyzer, some amateur radio equipment, possibly a working byzantium node, Dan Barlow's HeNe laser projector, and my own working [[:Category:BiosignalAmplifier]]. Our table was by far the best staffed and best equipped of any local hackerspaces.

Travis picked up a free Cube printer from 3DSystems. Hopefully, this 'appliance' 3D printer will help guarantee we have an operational printer at all times.

After making contact in person, and proceeding with some follow-up, SeeMeCNC shipped us a free Rostock Max kit, the absolute best-value printer on the market. Julia Longtin is taking care of assembly for that printer, as well as Shawn Wilson's own Rostock Max.

==== Photolithography PCB Fab ====
Modified an EEPROM timed UV exposure box, laser cut new PCB exposure jig, and improved software toolchain. Have now fabricated full-scale high-resolution PCBs suitable for complex circuits.

Practice is required to evenly develop/etch the PCBs. Follow the tips at [[:Category:Photolithography_PCB_Fab]] .

* Computer Numerical Control (CNC) - The ability to control a machine using mathematical commands
* Computer Aided Design (CAD) - Software which generates a model which a machine can translate into tooling commands for manufacturing.
* Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) - The actual process of production from file to finished product.

* Milling - The use of a spinning piece of metal to shape an object through calculated removal of a media, normally via an X / Y / Z axis.

=== Getting Started ===

To initially get started with the CNC mill, it's helpful to have a basic grasp of G Code. How better to get started with this than to begin playing.

==== Turning on the Mill ====
When turning on the mill there are three primary "light switch" style switches which should be turned on. The first is on the back of the black box labeled "MicroProto Systems, MicroMill DSLS 3000". This switch is located on the back to the right side (imagine reaching around on the rear right). Flipping the switch "up" should turn this on.

Next, turn on the main control to the spindle. This is achieved via the light switch on the M3/M5 box. Turn this to the "on" position (flicking it towards the label M3/M5).

Finally, turn on the spindle on the actual mill. This is in a blue enameled box residing on the Z axis. Flip this switch "up". If the spindle immediately starts spinning, this is because someone didn't send the control command to stop it. This isn't a problem, but we will want to stop it sooner than later. We will cover this in the next section.

To avoid unexpectedly turning on the spindle motor when powering on the machine, wait to flip the power switch to the on position until after EMC2 is running. This will ensure that the parallel port is in the appropriate state according to the configuration file to keep all motors off by default.

==== Starting Mach3 ====
This can be done by using the icon on the desktop.

==== Spindle control and Emergency Stop ====

If the tooling is clear of all obstacles, you can press ''F5'' to toggle the spindle motor on and off.

The switch on the right side of the mill, near the top will cut power to the spindle. This is the best way to shut it down in an emergency... but note that the axis can still move after the switch is thrown. Pressing ''Reset'' in the interface will signal Mach3 to make an ''Emergency Stop''. You'll see the ''Reset'' button blink, and the status line at the bottom will read "E-Stop Triggered, press reset...".

==== Making our first motions ====

===== Jog Controls =====
To start, we're going to use the "jog" functions to move the milling cutter around and get a feel for what is "positive" and "negative" on the X, Y, & Z axis.

Especially, when starting out, limit motion to the X and Y axis as this has the least potential for damaging our tooling (aka, breaking a bit). As you get a feel for what's positive and negative, we will start using larger motions.

To start, hit the "tab" key to bring up the Jog controls. The main settings on this panel are the ''Jog mode'', which can be either ''continuous'' or ''step''. In continuous mode, holding down the motion keys (described below) will make the axis move continuously, and quite a lot. In step mode, pressing or holding the motion keys will move only a fixed step per key-press. The step distance is also configurable on the Jog control screen. You can hide the jog controls when not in use by pressing the ''Tab'' key.

To start, select continuous mode in the jog controls and press the ''Left Arrow'' and ''Right Arrow''. Notice that the mill table moves left and right. This is the X axis. Next, press the ''Up arrow'' and ''Down Arrow'' keys briefly, notice that the mill table moves front to back. This is the Y axis. Finally, press the ''Page Up'' and ''Page Down'' keys briefly; notice that the spindle moves up and down. This is the Z axis. As you were moving the milling cutter around, you'll notice that the coordinates are displayed in the main window. This is where you can quickly survey where your tooling is located.

===== Obligatory Setup =====

Sometimes the ''Reset'' button in Mach3 will be flashing. This usually means that you exceeded the movement limits or speed of the mill and the controller has signaled Mach3 to stop. Often clicking reset is enough to clear this error.

===== Mill Controller Crash =====

Sometimes the controller will crash, this is usually evidenced by ''Reset'' complaining that it cannot clear a limit. It will offer a button that says "Fix this for me". "Fix this for me" actually redefines what an error is in the software (e.g. if input low is defined as an error, then it will redifine error as input high). Instead of clicking ''Fix this'', you should try turning off and on the mill controller using the switch on the rear, lower-right side. Clicking ''Reset'' again should clear the trouble.

===== Advanced Manual Control - MDI (Manual Data Input) =====
Click on the MDI tab in the main Mach3 screen to the MDI Controls section. Within this section (the line next to input) we can type in actual G Code to move our tooling around. To start, we're going to use simple "go to" commands. This will rapidly move the tool to the position that we tell it to. Note, at any time, we can stop the execution of these commands by hitting the "stop" button on the screen or typing ALT-S on the keyboard. The first command we will use is "rapid go to" or "g0". As an example: make sure the tooling is well clear of the table using the jog controls and all axis are (roughly) centered. Reset all axis (X, Y, Z) to zero using the ''Zero Axis'' button located to the left of the current axis location. As you click zero axis, you should see the axis change to -0.0000.

To make our first motion, let's move the X axis to position 0.5. To do this, enter this command into the box marked ''Input'':

g0 x0.5

The X axis should begin moving and it should stop 0.5" to the right of it's initial position.

Additionally, we can give multiple coordinates at once. Now try the command:

g0 x0 y0

This should send our tool back to the starting position. This can make things go much, much faster for resetting back to the position that you started with the mill at.

To have more fine grained control we can use the command "g1". There is nothing that G0 does which G1 cannot. The only difference in syntax is that we specify the feed rate of the motion as the first option. By default the mill is set to operate in inches per minute. Thus, unless you change this (via g code) it should be assumed that this will be the unit of measure for your commands.

Lets slowly raise our Z axis up one inch:

g1 f2 z1

Note, since we were at a position approx 1 inch up and told the mill to return to zero at a rate of F2 or 2 inches per minute, it will take approximately 30 seconds for this command to complete. Slow movement of the tool (especially when 'plunging' the z axis is a good idea as it allows for time to hit the "esc" key if things start going horribly wrong).

Now, let's build on some of these together:

Whoops, back to zero:

When moving back to zero you will see that the mill is moving half of the original speed (5 inches per minute rather than 10 inches per minute).

Let's really open this thing up and see what it can do. While watching this command move notice the ''feed rate'' indicator in the preview MDI tab. This will allow you to see the actual speed of the tool.

g1 f50 x1 y1 z1

Linear motion is great and all, but how about we dwell outside the euclidean space for a minute. The next commands that we are going to learn are G2/G3. G2 will make a clockwise arc while G3 will make a counterclockwise arc. The command syntax is as follows:

*G2 - Command
*Fx - Feedrate at X inches per minute
*Xv - Destination X coordinate (in this case end at v)
*Yw - Destination Y coordinate (in this case end at w)
*Ix - X axis center point offset
*Jy - Y axis center point offset
*Za - Interpolated Z axis coordinate (optional)

To start, lets make a circle:

g2 f5 x1 y0 i-0.5 j0

Annnnd we fail. This is because we've given junk data to the mill. Lets try that again making a circle. Of course, to make a circle, we will want our beginning (1,1,1) to be the same as our destination (1,1,1) only changing the X axis center point offset.

g2 f5 x1 y1 i-0.5 j0

Fun math bits... run that command again and note the "distance to go" or "DTG" in the preview area. Note the distance at the immediate start of plotting our 1 inch diameter circle (2 * 0.5 X offset). This should be a predictable [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi result]

=== Tool Changing ===
Use a wrench to gently remove the chuck. Check the toolbox beneath the mill for different bits and other things as required.

Little force should be required to tighten the chuck; it has been said that finger-tight is often sufficient.

Please cleanup the mill area and place tooling back into the mill toolbox under the bench.

Finally, turn off all three power switches noted above.

Please avoid doing these things, unless you can deal with the consequences yourself.

* Don't run the mill too far off axis. The stepper motors will usually make a harsh grinding sound when this happens.
* Don't leave the mill completely unattended. Be prepared to hit the ''Reset'' key within at most a minute of hearing something go wrong.
* Obviously, don't put your hands in hazardous places.

Otherwise, the mill is robust and newbie friendly.

I would like to recognize Martin's years of contributions to HacDC from its inception until his regrettable resignation. During the early days, he put in countless hours getting the space organized, including building shelves. This sweat equity continued to grow in countless projects throughout the years. He spearheaded the organization and creation of HARC, organized presenters, and funded the direct mail initiative to increase its membership. I'm going to miss his energy around the space.
