There was a meeting in the space at 1pm on Saturday, 6 December 2008 to start prototyping the Asterisk back-end.

Discussion is taking place on the red door mailing list.

Current plans
As per a discussion Nate had with Brian on Tuesday, December 16th, here are the current plans:

Requirement: the person doing the unlocking must see the guest before opening the door. So, unlocking by phone is not permissible. Either get video on screen, or just walk downstairs and see 'em through the window.

Outside: All that's needed is a camera, a keypad, and a place Brian can stick a printed directory page. Two-way audio (speakerphone at the outside panel) would be nice too but isn't a strict requirement. The video will be served to the internet over St. Stephen's internet connection.

When a guest dials a suite number: (which will be a 1 or 2 digit number, probably followed by the star or pound key) The system should place a call over the PSTN to ring whoever's associated with that space. The suite-number-to-phone-number lookup table will be maintained by Brian.

When the phone is answered: It'd be nice to have two-way audio to the panel, so the answerer can talk to the guest and ascertain who they are. BUT UNLOCKING CANNOT BE DONE BY PHONE. See "requirement", above.

To unlock the door: The answerer (or anyone else) can just walk downstairs and open the door, OR pull up video over the web, and after having visually confirmed the guest's identity, the answerer can enter their PIN on the website and unlock the door that way. So the webserver will need a copy of the PIN database, or will need to forward all attempts to some other device to try them.

Any authorized user can just enter their PIN at the keypad and let themself in, of course. (Yeah, I know that's not a word. Bite me, English language!)

Caveat: The answerer could just tell their PIN to the guest over the phone, couldn't they? To prevent this, and enforce the face-view requirement, perhaps the keypad could refuse to accept PINs for a while after dialing a suite number.

Ideally: Video from the panel camera will be split, so it can be digitized by the web video server AND by the surveillance recorder in Brian's office, which is NOT connected to the internet.
When I first read this, I was thinking radio station, and was going to point out the local amateur radio station. And then I decided that I was going to point it out anyways - because I can see an interesting friendship developing over time. I can put HacDC in contact with people there if it is ever desired.
Perhaps this page, or perhaps the entire hobby of amateur radio, fails to make clear the distinction between "the amateur radio service" (licensed under part 97 of the FCC rules), and "low-power broadcasting", which is something completely different. Hams can't broadcast. We transmit, but only for the purpose of communicating with other amateurs. We're prohibited from broadcasting to the general public. Music is forbidden on the amateur bands, for instance. We should also consider low-power broadcasting, but this page is about ham radio.
Paint removal
The walls are covered in pretty nasty old paint, much of which is already flaking off. We presume at least some layers contain lead. Wirebrushes and scrapers are the preferred tool to remove this without turning it to powder in the process.

Asbestos encapsulation
A large steam pipe runs the length of the room, near the ceiling. It is wrapped in mineral wool insulation, presumed to be asbestos. The EPA has changed its tune on this in recent years, and now recommends professional contractors be used for even the most minor of repairs, but I (Nate) am comfortable following the old guidelines, to encapsulate the fibers with latex paint, which is very effective at keeping them from getting into the air.

Safety gear
We have Tyvek bunny-suits, half-mask respirators, goggles, and shoe covers. These should keep most of the nasty off your skin, but plan to go home and shower after your shift anyway. Can't be too careful.

Electrical Power
Nate says:
:It appears that all the nearby distribution panels are maxed out and many already host more than their share of double "cheater" breakers, so running new circuits would involve adding a sub-panel off the main, which is relatively distant. This would cost a chunk of change.

:Alternatively, we can try to add outlets in our room that're served by a few neighboring circuits, so we'd be unlikely to blow breakers just by running a few tools at the same time as a dust extractor. This is the low-hanging fruit and seems reasonable. The church has a local electrician who they've worked with before, who only charges $75/hr, who would likely be amenable to letting us do the bulk of the work ourselves and just performing final hookup himself.

:On the plus side, being below grade and having no significant sun exposure, the room stays pretty cool in summer, and Brian doesn't think an air conditioner would be necessary unless we were running some pretty heavy duty equipment down there for long periods.

The discussion list for this project is museum@hacdc.org.

Proposal
With the recent -redacted for privacy review- donation, it's obvious that HacDC is now the recipient of some unusual, historical, and unique items. To honor Mr. -redacted-s memory and preserve the unique nature of his gift, I propose to create The HacDC Museum of Technology, and within the museum the -redacted- Collection of Telephony, curated by HacDC membership.

Because of space concerns, I envision a locked storage box to collect artifacts suitable for the museum that are off-limit for use in projects, but available for examination and research by the membership. Because a storage box is not precisely the ideal for a burgeoning museum, items will be photographed, videod, catalogued, and available to the general public via a website or wiki.

As an organization, HacDC has designated several areas of concentration. The museum will fulfill several of the specific purposes of the Bylaws, including:

* Collaborate on all forms of technology, culture and craft in new and interesting ways.
* Apply the results of its work to specific cultural, charitable and scientific causes.
* Freely share its research and discoveries, using what is learned to teach others.

Initial items for the collection include:

* Lineman's handsets
* Blue Box
* AT&T Reference Manuals
* Historical Books
* Korean War Era Military Field Phone (working condition, sound great over 1000' of wire)
* Slide Rules

History
Ben Stanfield proposed this project. <br />
As this project required specific earmarking of present HacDC resources subject to the discretion of its participants, it required membership approval. <br />
This project was approved at the June 17, 2008 member meeting.

Myself: /* Strong oppose. This is a hacker space, not Model UN. */ new section

I think this is a horrible idea! Libera me... Free me! We need a free and open membership with power to create, build, and change the world. Creating little power structures is only going to limit the potential and opportunity for the membership.

And, we are creating a system that allows limitless possibilities... let's keep building that and focus on innovation, leaving behind us rules and regulations.

Richard Bewley,
Donor

Strong oppose. This is a hacker space, not Model UN.
The proposal uses the euphemism "quickly organized projects" to refer to everything the space has ever done. The opposite of a "quickly organized project" is not, as it would seem, a "project with advance notice". Rather, it is a "project with advance notice at least one quorum-achieving meeting prior to its start, administrative overhead, and a papermonger to ride herd over the whole thing".

I like to remind people how expensive volunteer labor really is. It's also fickle. This policy would have the effect of biasing the process towards those members who revel in paperwork, and against, well, everyone who's ever actually accomplished anything for HacDC.

By my reading, if this policy had been in place from the beginning:

No shelves would have been built. Not only did the total expense for lumber and hardware (and the circular saw) exceed $100, but it was all purchased in drips and drabs when the need for it became apparent. Even supposing that there HAD been frequent quora to approve budgets, I wouldn't have undertaken the project because I am allergic to paperwork. If you find someone else who has a fondness for administrivia, a hand for carpentry, and a few hundred hours a month to dedicate to HacDC, by all means, send 'em over.

The Patent Examiner's stuff would've been passed up. Renting the van was a chunk of change, and I believe it was reimbursed. (I'm not sure of that, however.) Regardless, it came out of nowhere on very short notice, and no instant quorum was available to approve it.

HackersMart would not have happened. Yes, the idea was mentioned some time in advance of HOPE. But it didn't take clear enough shape to actually put together a budget for it until much later. Purchasing parts was already delayed so far that one order didn't arrive in time, and that's with no additional paperwork overhead. The pegboard display wall wouldn't have been built, since I didn't know what it would consist of until I was halfway done building it. And did you notice that the pegboard was carefully sized for reuse, enabling the Components Store display wall to pop up with zero additional purchases? I think that's good value for money, but I wouldn't have done it if there'd been hoops to jump through. Who would have?

Again, this policy would restrict such activity to only those individuals who can write up a detailed and complete BoM prior to beginning work. So far, I think everything that's actually benefitted the space has been done by individuals and in circumstances that this policy would block.

Bureaucrats beget bureaucracy. I oppose this trend as strongly as an absentee member can. Every bit of effort, every speck of sawdust, every drop of sweat I shed on behalf of HacDC is insulted by this proposal. Myself 19:58, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

We don't need hookup wire!
TC, you might not have noticed that, on my last visit, I brought down two sizable hanks of telco wire. One bunch is 24AWG, one bunch is 22AWG. It's all multipair, twisted to cat-3 spec (so it's easy to untwist), tinned copper, with color-coded jackets following the modern telco scheme. I think there's around a dozen feet of each, which multiplied by the number of pairs in the jacket, works out to many hundreds of feet of wire. The bulk of it is stored on the floor in a heavy triwall corrugated box labeled "WIRE", and there are some smaller bits pulled out of the outer jacket, sitting in the small plastic shoebox behind the door, also labeled "WIRE".
Mouser and Digi-Key are the "big guns" of the hobbyist and small professional electronics market, with breathtaking inventories, fast order fulfillment, and sophisticated websites. Digi-Key adds a handling fee to orders under $25.

Marlin P. Jones & Associates is a smaller web retailer specializing in power supplies, but with a fair assortment of other stuff too. Their prices on breadboards are hard to beat. (Thanks Jon for that tip!)

All Electronics has been in the surplus electronics game for a long time, with a small newsprint catalog that's a staple in many geeks' bathrooms. As with any surplus dealer, their inventory is constantly in flux, and sometimes they have really amazing deals.

B.G. Micro (known pre-9/11 as "The Electronics Mecca", now calls itself "The Electronics Supplier") is a small mostly-surplus dealer whose bright yellow catalog offers Texas humor mixed with eyestrain. Their shopping cart software is chaotic evil, but they have great prices, particularly on industrial stuff like thermal fuses and zener diodes.

Electronics Goldmine has a better selection of motors, magnets, and boxes than almost anyone else. They offer "GoldPaks", grab-bags and assortments of surplus (sometimes take-outs) hardware, some of which are so-so deals and some of which are simply jawdropping.

HacDC ran HackersMart, The Hackers Convenience Store, during The Last HOPE. Designed to be a "one stop shop" for things attendees might need and might not be readily available (especially at night), it's a way to raise money for HacDC and provide a service to conference goers. In the future, Hackersmart will be traveling to other Conferences.

Hackersmart Lessons Learned
Preparation
* Make sure everyone knows how to operate the cash register.
* When members are scheduling their travel to and from the event, have them take into account the time it will take to set up and tear down the Hackersmart, including hauling and loading boxes.
* Bring only labeled boxes. Keep things sorted as much as possible throughout the event. Confusion leads to lost sales.
* New customers are like razor-toothed gree worms. They can be succulent, but sometimes they bite back.

Inventory
* Keep a notepad upon which to record requests. Every time someone asks for something you don't have, even if it seems like an item you'd never consider carrying, write it down. Future business ideas start here.
* Establish a dedicated separate spot for "employees" to leave their crap so it doesn't get mistaken for inventory. Especially on Sunday as people check out of their rooms, crap piles up.

Pricing
* Price everything clearly, or mark "make-offer" items as such.
* Get someone familiar with each item to price it. If there's something unique about an otherwise mundane-looking item, that familiar person should write it down so that, if they're not available when a customer wants to haggle, those who are available don't unknowingly let it go too cheap.
* Giving things away can sometimes be much more profitable than selling them. Handing someone a pair of two-cent LEDs and saying "don't worry about it" usually got a few quarters or sometimes a whole dollar thrown in the tipjar.

Discussion: Physical Access Control Project

So i'm a wiki-tard, is there anyway to make these discussions threaded? Seems like it would make more sense

Added by Mark W, Thu, May 22, 2008: I think this is what you're looking for: Electric Door Strike

Elliot demo'ed his knock-code routine and got some useful feedback. Things like ambient noise and a relatively-long timeout period need improvement.

Andrew suggested using a "Sonic Screwdriver" a la Doctor Who. This opens up all sorts of fun/funny code mechanisms. For instance, a keyfob with an ultrasonic speaker might be sweet. Or use LEDs and blink out a code string into a light sensor. And like the RFID scheme, we could have individual keys for individual peoples.

Thoughts: Smart cards can offer some nice crypto, but they'd require the purchase of additional hardware (a kit) and are more expensive than RFID (around $2.50)

Another idea I had, and kinda like, is to have a computer connected to the internet and a SIP provider (as noted repeatedly, you can get free inbound calls via Google GrandCentral). When a call is received, it could listen for an access code (prepend a few digits for user id if desired) --NikolasCo 09:27, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

how easy is it to forge phone number? because otherwise you could just have a database of member cellphones --phf

pretty easy with asterisk and a voip provider. --markw

-----

I'm with you on the wiki-tard front, and not sure the "discussion" page is really all that good for discussions, being essentially a whiteboard. Anyone?

Andrew, thanks for cleaning this up and making the project look all professional-like. Feel free to delete any of the old material as you see fit. I wasn't sure what the tone of the project should be initially, and I took it fairly far in the unprofessional direction. I like what you've done with it better.

As for the logic layer in-between the card reader and electronic impeder/strikeplate/whatever, that should be fairly simple, depending on how much fun we decide to have with it. Myself, I'm for keeping it fairly open to allow multiple (amusing?) opening mechanisms in addition to the keycards, but that will necessarily reduce the security of the lock.

Are we building a fortress or just beefing up our current (minimal!) security?

(Elliot)

-----

Well, you guys can use the "add a comment" button (i.e. the little + next to edit)
I know you were looking at a couple of options for the electronic door as of
the last dork bot, I found this part in passing on hackaday.com
http://www.smarthome.com/519012.html
I hope to make it down from baltimore soon!
-justin.

/<br />
To answer Elliot's question:

I think the purpose is to provide an extensible level of access to our members, improve upon the trivial amount of security we currently have and finally to be creative and have fun designing "peripherals" to add onto our strike plate / logic controller setup we choose.

Justin: Thanks ! That's what I've been looking to pick-up. I'm just waiting for the mechanical portion to show up so I can install that and move onto the electronics.
-Q
<br />
/

Re-Ordering the Phases? I want my strike plate NOW! (with pony)
Say, is there any chance of getting in the strike plate soon? It seems to me that the bolt-lock part and the electronic strike part are basically independent, no?

I'm starting to think about how to implement an open hardware API-like plan for the strike plate, and would love to start working on the physical stuff. And the knocker-unlocker is ready to plug in right now. We could hoke up an RFID (low-Hz) pretty quickly too.

Can we just buy the strike plate? The one suggested (this one) looks great. I'm volunteering.

Multiple systems not a problem.
Assume a rolling-code generator. Delivering the number from the token to the lock could take a variety of routes without reducing the security of the system. Want to use ultrasonics? Fine. DTMF? Not a problem. Infrared or visible light? Piece of cake. Feed the demodulated data from each receiver into the same rolling code verifier. Each user can carry the token that most amuses them.

Operating this system in parallel with a "real" traditional system, using smartcards of RFID tags, shouldn't be a problem. Install two traditional readers: One in the HacDC entryway, and one at the church outer door, and merge the systems. Myself 16:31, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

One of the primary purposes of a hacker space is to hold nifty stuff that the members can't store at their residences or simply wish to make available to other members. I see no reason why cool stuff that "remains without purpose or plan" should be purged after a month simply because nobody's claimed it yet.

Perhaps another way of expressing this idea is that some stuff is so potentially useful that, by default, it "has purpose" unless someone complains that it's wasting space. There definitely is a class of stuff that should go unless someone wants it, but I don't think all "property" should be so condemned without due cause. In my own lair, I can make solo judgments about what to keep and what to pitch, but in a community workspace it would suck for one person to throw out stuff that someone else wanted to keep. At the June 3rd, 2008 meeting, a basic outgoing-stuff strategy was outlined:

* If you think something should be thrown out, move it to the outgoing-stuff box.
* After a week in the box, if nobody objects, out it goes.
* If you want something in the box, consider taking it home instead of storing it at the space!
Incoming donations that do not find their way into the HacDC infrastructure, set aside for a project or identified as valuable for future use in its donated form should be, in the following order of priority:

# Cannibalized for usable parts, craft projects and/or disassembled for educational purposes
# Donated to another non-profit organization who could divert the donation from the waste stream
# Granted to a member who promises to divert the item from the waste stream and not sell the item for personal gain. (Must notify Central Services for compliance reasons before acquiring or removing resources donated to HacDC.)
# Sold to any for-profit organization or individual willing to pay for it

Myself: outcome of june 13th meeting, next steps

Proposal
This project, in its current form, will be announced at the June 17 member meeting

The Columbia Heights Wireless Project aims to provide wireless access to the Internet to HacDC's neighbors in Columbia Heights. This project, in three phases, will help test different technologies and methods for providing this access as well as building local neighborhood IT infrastructure.

Phase One: Rewire St. Stephen's Church
St. Stephen's Church is used by many community organizations, each of which are responsible for obtaining their own Internet and Telephone service.

There are potential costs savings for the church and its tenants to upgrade the IT infrastructure of the facility, allowing the church and tenants to share common Internet access and Telephone service.

After assessing the needs of the church, its tenants and occasional guests from out of town, HacDC will draft a plan to re-wire the telecommunications and networking infrastructure of the church. Prior to consultation with the tenants (this consultation meeting is scheduled for June 13) this phase has the following goals:

* Replace the IT wiring infrastructure of the church.
** Remove all "dead cables" from the exterior and interior of the church
** Run house cable to church office and basement and other key areas of the church, reducing need for cabling on the outside of the building and/or expansive cable runs within the building
** Replace the demarc with more modern equipment (should be done by Verizon)
** Install wired outlets in offices and other places they may be necessary
** Run wire to ares where wireless access points may be deployed
* Provide building wide Internet access
** Replace multiple DSL lines with one solid, very high speed internet connection
** Install building router to handle and segregate internet connection
** Provide church and its tenants with private subnet
** Provide wired network access to tenants who require it
** Provide infrastructure for building-wide wireless network
* Build church wireless network
** Provide private wireless networks to tenants who require it
** Provide public wireless network for church and tenant guests, etc.
* Integrate church security system into building wide network
** Replace existing church security and entry system (see also Physical_Access_Control_Project)
** Provide method for tenants to view persons outside the building and allow building access

Phase Two: Provide Wireless to the Housing Project Surrounding the Church
Once the hurdles of providing wireless to a given area (the church) are handled, the goal is to extending the public church network to the housing project which surrounds the church. The goals of this project are relatively less complex:

* Provide public wireless accessible in all rooms of the development around the church
* Work with community members on best methods for building and supporting a public wireless network
* Deploy specialized equipment on the roof of the church and possibly on the development property
* Work out technical challenges present in extending the public network beyond church immediate line-of-sight

Phase Three: Provide Wireless to Neighborhood Buildings
* Provide public wireless available throughout Columbia Heights
* Attract public and government support to make such a public wireless network viable and sustainable

----
Implementation
A meeting was held with the church coordinator and a few tenants on Friday, June 13th, to assess the needs and scope of the project. As outlined above, it looks quite viable, with a few considerations:

All the tenants we met with are currently using some form of DSL or dialup access. They'd all be happy with a plain vanilla shared connection, using whatever sort of upstream we find appropriate. One tenant (CISPES) uses VoIP phones, and at least one other (Brainfood) uses Skype heavily, so QoS factors (latency, jitter) are important.

Telephone needs were also discussed. Most tenants have POTS lines into their spaces, with a few using cellular phones exclusively, and one using VoIP, as mentioned above. There's at least one FAX line. The POTS customers weren't averse to going VoIP at some point in the future, as long as they can keep their existing numbers.

As for security, it'd be nice to distribute front-door video to each space and provide tenants with an intercom and a way to buzz guests into the building. This would let the church go down to a nighttime guard only, saving the cost of the daytime guard.

In my (Nate B) professional judgment, the voice and video projects should be considered separately from the data project, except where it would be wise to combine cabling installation. Running a PBX is a wholly separate set of administration skills and maintenance considerations. Likewise, assembling a video distribution network and interfacing with the door lock system is a separate job, only related because it also involves running wire in the building.

Since inexpensive baluns are available to transmit video over a single pair of UTP, a single additional run of Cat-5 to each space should be adequate to support the access project. Since wire is cheap compared to labor (even volunteer labor, trust me!), I don't think there's any such thing as pulling "too many" drops into each space. Leave the unused ones coiled and tagged in the ceiling if need be, but run extra cable now.

The next steps for the first phase, then, are as follows:

* Formally present this project at the next HacDC meeting and get member approval and buy-in.
* Obtain, or draw, floor plans of the building. Scope out good cable routes, be they inside walls, above drop ceilings, or held in surface wiring raceways.
* Perform a site-survey to ascertain the RF propagation characteristics of the church building. Plaster lath walls are notorious for eating wifi signals.
* Determine whether it's appropriate to do everything as a home-run to a single closet, or to have "vertical" house-cables that appear on each floor. (I like home runs. --Nate B.)
* Pick a location for a wiring closet. In addition to patch panels, it should be able to hold (and provide cooling for) a moderate amount of infrastructure gear: A DSL modem, a router, an Ethernet switch or two, a midspan PoE injector, a video distribution amplifier, a small PBX, and whatever lock control system gets built. A bit of room for growth would be good, to allow for scope creep.
* Solicit donations of wire, jacks, accesspoints, and the above infrastructure gear.
* Evaluate potential upstream connections. Nick mentioned that point-to-point microwave access may be available in our location. Consider multi-homing the network, if financially practical.
* Contact community members who'd be interested in helping the project and learning to maintain and administer the network.

HacDC makes resources available for member and community use. HacDC must ensure that these resources are used responsibly and within any applicable guidelines set down by suppliers of those resources.

Note: This policy is still subject to member review and approval

Space Use Policy
* Respect your fellow members.
* Keep the space as available as possible for as many purposes as possible
* Work takes precedence over sociailizing.
* Members are responsible for their actions as well as those of their guests.
* Always remember to properly clean and secure the space before leaving.

Access
All members shall have as much physical access as possible to the leased space of HacDC.

When full access is limited, ministers shall always have full access. Otherwise, no unreasonable request for full access will be denied. All those with full access bear additional responsibilities for enabling full access to all members.

Priority
# Public Events
# Projects
# Social Networking (i.e. Hanging Out)

Public Events
Members are encouraged to schedule public events. Public events are, by default, open to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Any member may schedule a public event at least one week in advance by simply:

# Scheduling the event on the Events Calendar
# Making a blog post about the event
# Posting about the event (with a link to the blog post) to the members list

Members should publicize public events.

Projects
Members are encouraged to work on projects while they're at the space. Projects that help support the space as a whole take priority over other projects.

Members actively working on a project take precedence over any potential social gathering. Members engaged in projects and members engaged in socializing should beware of this, and adjust their activities accordingly.

Members engaged in an active project may request other members to curtail or limit any activity which interferes with their pursuit of an active project. This is why members are strongly encouraged to bring their guests during a public event.

Members may bring guests to help work on projects and recruit those guests to become members!

Social Networking
Social collaboration is another important aspect to HacDC. Effective working relationships are often built or reinforced over casual social gathering. HacDC should function as a Third Space, allowing members and their guests to build interpersonal relationships outside the scope of working on an active project.

As such, members are subject to no hard limitation on the number of guests they can bring into the space, as long as they accept full responsibility for the guests they bring.

Donated Resources Policy
Donated resources should be used in the following order of priority:

# HacDC Infrastructure or Tools Collection
# Member-Approved Projects
# All Other Projects

It is assumed that, given these parameters, members will work out the best use of donated resources as quickly as possible.

Finally, property which remains without purpose or plan for more than one month will be sent away for responsible e-waste recycling.

Tools & Equipment Use
* Use tools and equipment responsibly.
* Put tools and equipment away where they belong in a way that best preserves their usefulness.
* When in doubt, ask for help and training.
* If you're not sure an individually-owned tool is available for general use, ask its owner.
* Don't act in a way that would lead to expansion of this policy.

Internet Use Policy
We are subject to the Speakeasy Terms of Service

All users of the HacDC internal network are responsible for ensuring they are in compliance with the Speakeasy TOS.

Has anyone been to the Museum of Useful things in Cambridge? Unfortunately it's now closed, but it used to be a combined store and museum, with old and interesting gadgets displayed in cases and above head level around the store. It's the first thing that came to mind when Ben proposed a HacDC museum. The Museum of Useful Things still exists online, but primarily as a store. I couldn't find much on their site about the things in their collection, but there are a few pages (Example).

One thing that I liked about the physical store is that they often displayed old and new versions of the same product (with the new version available to buy). For example, this staple-free stapler was displayed under a model that looked more like one of these guys.

:Sounds like a really interesting concept. I'd love to aim for a more expansive display of artifacts, space permitting, and if the Museum is wildly successful, perhaps its own space someday in the distant future. The idea of a store is intriguing, as well. Perhaps as HacDC grows, there could be something akin to the 826 Valencia model, where a fun storefront (They have a Pirate Store, a superhero store, and a Bigfoot Research Institute) is the gateway to a spectacular hacking/teaching space and proceeds are used to subsidize the programs of HacDC. There's been some debate about whether to name the collection after our first large benefactor, and whether to identify objects in the collection as having been donated by certain individuals. A suggestion has been made by Derek Cooper to contact the benefactor's family to verify permission to use the name, but to avoid a potentially embarrassing situation, I think it would be wise to see if the group is in favor of naming a part of the collection after the benefactor before asking for permission.
* Bjorn 06:44, 13 June 2008 (UTC) - Anonymity was a good idea. We can have full disclosure of what is really too great a story to keep under raps. It keeps things impersonal, and I don't see what anyone has to gain from non-anonymous entanglement. Besides, I have other items I'd contribute, and I'd expect this sort of donation will become a regular occurrence - lets just keep things neutral. What Mrs. X did was very kind, but lets keep the exchange as agreed upon initially.

::I think that whenever possible, we should honor the wishes of donors (or their families, when applicable), so whatever we decide about identifying or not identifying this benefactor shouldn't determine what we do with future donations. If you were to contribute items and request anonymity, I don't see any problem with granting it. I would also disagree that removing the personal items would mean keeping a great story under wraps. We don't really have a story--we have some fun speculations about how the items in the boxes might have been used, with no way of substantiating them. While it's fun to bat around amusing theories, I personally wouldn't publicize this personal "story" even if the donor remained anonymous. === Discussion Relating to Name Controversy ===

* I think we can be selective about what we put in the "official" museum collection, but there is other interesting, amusing (embarrassing?) stuff that was in the boxes that has been photographed and put up on Flickr--and more that has yet to be photographed, no doubt. Even if it doesn't end up in the museum, it wouldn't be difficult for someone to go to HacDC's Flickr group and see the unofficial stuff mixed in with the official. Given the email from the widow, I do think it would be nice to name a collection or something after this guy, but if we do that, then I will take down my pictures of anything that I think might embarrass his family. Sarah 16:23, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

* I see the collection breaking into four categories:
# Innocent, unidentifiable items: Telephones, test gear. These could be exhibited with a name, with no trouble at all.
# Innocent, identifiable items: Patent notebooks, research he was involved in. Even if partially redacted, someone who did a little digging could connect these with him. But by itself, that would do no harm.
# Risque or embarassing items: Some of these are interesting but I wouldn't want to connect them with the family name.
# Dangerous items: I won't discuss these further in a public forum.
It seems to me that any combination of 1, 2, and 3 would work, since if someone wants to do the digging and figure out who printed those fart jokes, the "damage" is minimal. It'd be better to avoid mixing 2 and 3, if we wish to play it safe in that regard. But 4 absolutely cannot appear with 2. And honestly, for our own safety, I don't think 4 should appear or be mentioned at all. If you disagree, please do so in person.
In general, I think our best course is (1 & 3), with redaction of 3 if necessary. We're under no obligation to name anything, and some stuff in 3 is really neat. If we want to pay tribute to the widow's generosity, we could do so in a way not connected with the collection. (Just list her as a donor, or something.)
