HacDC is hosting a biweekly study group dedicated to mastering the fabled computer science text, [http://mitpress.mit.edu/sicp/ Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs], by Harold Abelson and Gerald Jay Sussman, with Julie Sussman. This text is now available for free under a [http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License]. We began in May, 2012 and plan to continue this session until we finish the book.

== Logistics ==

Anyone is welcome to attend, normally the meetings are held in person at the [http://www.hacdc.org/location/ HacDC space], in the classroom area, although if that is booked, we may meet in the sanctuary.

=== Meetup Group ===

We keep the master calendar on [http://www.meetup.com/hac-dc/events/calendar/ the HacDC meetup] calendar. Please RSVP If you plan to attend a session.
=== Mailing List ===

Students are encouraged to join the [https://groups.google.com/a/hacdc.org/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/sicp SICP mailing list] where class discussions take place between study groups.

=== Text ===

SICP comes in both print and electronic editons. Amazon sells a [http://www.amazon.com/Structure-Interpretation-Computer-Programs-Engineering/dp/0262510871 new softcover print editon] for about $33. The [http://mitpress.mit.edu/sicp/full-text/book/book.html free online HTML text] from MIT is the most complete and functional electronic version, but there's an [https://github.com/ieure/sicp epub version] ([https://github.com/downloads/ieure/sicp/sicp.epub download]) suitable for ebook readers (Kindle, iPad, etc) available also.

=== Tools ===

Any fully functioning Scheme interpreter will work. Most people in the class are using [http://racket-lang.org/download/ DrRacket] due to its excellent interactive debugger and friendly beginner environment. It's also possible to use these tools:

* [http://www.gnu.org/software/mit-scheme/ MIT Scheme], the environment the text recommends.
* [http://www.gnu.org/software/guile/ GNU Guile] (built into most Linux distributions, try "sudo apt-get guile" or "sudo yum install guile")
* [http://slidetocode.com/ Lisping], a radical new iPad Scheme and Clojure programming environment

== Exercise Solutions ==

Several study group members are posting their solutions online:

* [https://github.com/benauthor/sicp-in-sheeps-clothing Ben's solutions], including some JavaScript and Python solutions
* [https://github.com/bwestergard/sicp-exercises Bjorn's solutions]
* [https://github.com/obscurerichard/sicp-study Richard's solutions]

== Resources ==

* [http://www.billthelizard.com/ Bill the Lizard] has exercise solutions and ruminations on SICP that started with this [http://www.billthelizard.com/2009/10/sicp-challenge.html 2009 blog entry]
* [http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-001-structure-and-interpretation-of-computer-programs-spring-2005/ MIT OpenCourseWare SICP class] with video lectures
* [http://www-formal.stanford.edu/jmc/recursive.html RECURSIVE FUNCTIONS OF SYMBOLIC EXPRESSIONS AND THEIR COMPUTATION BY MACHINE] The paper that started it all, describing the theory behind LISP.

Has anyone been to the Museum of Useful things in Cambridge? Unfortunately it's now closed, but it used to be a combined store and museum, with old and interesting gadgets displayed in cases and above head level around the store. It's the first thing that came to mind when Ben proposed a HacDC museum. The Museum of Useful Things still exists online, but primarily as a store. I couldn't find much on their site about the things in their collection, but there are a few pages ([http://themut.com/exhibits/2/ Example]).

One thing that I liked about the physical store is that they often displayed old and new versions of the same product (with the new version available to buy). For example, this [http://themut.com/zoomprod/product72/ staple-free stapler] was displayed under a model that looked more like one of [http://www.officemuseum.com/stapler_gallery_stapleless.htm these guys].

:Sounds like a really interesting concept. I'd love to aim for a more expansive display of artifacts, space permitting, and if the Museum is wildly successful, perhaps its own space someday in the distant future. The idea of a store is intriguing, as well. Perhaps as HacDC grows, there could be something akin to the [http://www.826valencia.org/ 826 Valencia] model, where a fun storefront (They have a Pirate Store, a superhero store, and a Bigfoot Research Institute) is the gateway to a spectacular hacking/teaching space and proceeds are used to subsidize the programs of HacDC. We're a long way from that, but it's something to consider. [[User:Ben|Ben]] 19:10, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
== Name Controversy ==

There's been some debate about whether to name the collection after our first large benefactor, and whether to identify objects in the collection as having been donated by certain individuals. A suggestion has been made by Derek Cooper to contact the benefactor's family to verify permission to use the name, but to avoid a potentially embarrassing situation, I think it would be wise to see if the group is in favor of naming a part of the collection after the benefactor before asking for permission.

Those '''in favor''' of naming the collection after the benefactor, pending permission from his heirs
* [[User:Bjorn|Bjorn]] 06:44, 13 June 2008 (UTC) - Anonymity was a good idea. We can have full disclosure of what is really too great a story to keep under raps. It keeps things impersonal, and I don't see what anyone has to gain from non-anonymous entanglement. Besides, I have other items I'd contribute, and I'd expect this sort of donation will become a regular occurrence - lets just keep things neutral. What Mrs. X did was very kind, but lets keep the exchange as agreed upon initially.

=== Discussion Relating to Name Controversy ===

I think we can be selective about what we put in the "official" museum collection, but there is other interesting, amusing (embarrassing?) stuff that was in the boxes that has been photographed and put up on Flickr--and more that has yet to be photographed, no doubt. Even if it doesn't end up in the museum, it wouldn't be difficult for someone to go to HacDC's Flickr group and see the unofficial stuff mixed in with the official. Given the email from the widow, I do think it would be nice to name a collection or something after this guy, but if we do that, then I will take down my pictures of anything that I think might embarrass his family.

This Dues Waiver is scheduled for consideration at the June 17, 2008 member meeting.

Nick Farr, Minister of Finance and longtime friend of Nate B's is proposing this dues waiver.

== Summary ==

'''Approve a dues waiver for Nate B through January, 2009.''' This waiver would relieve his standard obligation to pay dues and allow him to continue to contribute as a bona-fide member of HacDC. Since the waiver is based on merit, not hardship, it is subject to member approval.

== Justification ==

For the past two weeks, Nate has dedicated nearly every waking moment to infrastructure development of HacDC. He has built one wall of shelves, reinforced the other, purchased all manner of improvements for the space (boxes and bins, drawer hardware, etc), contributed to the wiki, promoted HacDC at the DC 2600 meeting, and pretty much done everything in his power to make sure this venture succeeds and thrives.

More from Nate: "I will return home to Detroit sooner or later. After another few days, probably. And I don't know when I'll be able to visit DC again. (But there's a chance it'll be nearly immediate; I'm having a blast!) I think I've contributed plenty of sweat equity, and I don't think a regular monthly paying membership is appropriate in this case. But I would like to legitimize my presence in the space, and on the mailing list, by requesting a membership with waived dues."

== Precedent ==

I believe Nate's activities in furthering HacDC's development set a very strong precedent for when and why we would grant a dues waiver. Nate's overall economic sacrifice in coming to DC from the Detroit, MI area in addition to making HacDC effectively a full time job for two weeks sets the golden standard for work in lieu of dues.

== Nate B's Biography ==

Nate has been active in the community for 12 years, primarily through the Michigan 2600 group. Nate's first contribution to HacDC was printing dot-matrix banners for our display at Notacon, and he's been interested in finding out what it takes to start a hacker space. It's a subject he's been interested in for some time, and he's very interested in opening some sort of community workshop in the Detroit area, where he lives.

== Support ==

I fully back this proposal, Nate has contributed prodigiously to HacDC. - [[User:Bjorn|Bjorn]] 01:16, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Bjorn: /* Software */ - Link formatting tweak

The first step is to get set up with all the necessary hardware and software to start making your controllers do your bidding.

== Programmer ==

A programmer needn't be super-fancy. In fact, you can get by with five wires soldered to a parallel port plug if you'd like. [http://www.instructables.com/id/Ghetto-Programming%3a-Getting-started-with-AVR-micro/ This Instructable] steps through making a parallel port programmer. I'll probably make up a cable or two and bring it in to the space if you'd just like to try it out. Note that if you've got a breadboard, you can skip the step of making a programming cradle and just plug the wires into the correct pins on the AVR.

If you're getting a little more serious, spend $22 and get a [http://www.ladyada.net/make/usbtinyisp/ USB-based programmer from ladyada] or make your own [http://www.xs4all.nl/~dicks/avr/usbtiny/ usbtiny SPI programmer] for maybe $10-15ish. If you're making your own, you'll need to flash an AVR with the supplied firmware, but you can do that with a parallel port programmer or just ask one of us to hook you up.

This part may seem daunting -- it's not. Dive in or get someone to help you. The Ladyada kit is a good first/second soldering project.

== Software ==

The standard toolchain consists of a GCC-based C cross-compiler, the AVR-libc libraries, and the software to run your programmer: ''avrdude.'' Feel free to write the C or assembler code using whatever editor you like best.

For Windows, it's all put together nicely with [http://sourceforge.net/projects/winavr WinAVR]. Download and install. If you're using a parallel port programmer, you'll need to also run the included ''giveio.bat'' file to get yourself permissions.

For Linux, it's not that hard either. I'm most familiar with Ubuntu these days. As of 2008/04, "sudo apt-get install avrdude avr-libc binutils-avr gcc-avr" will set you up. Or fetch tarballs and compile it yourself. (I'll incluce versions here in a few.)

For Mac, I don't have a Mac. Is any of this [http://www.ladyada.net/learn/avr/setup-mac.html from Ladyada's site] useful?

== Chips ==

So you're set to program, but you need a couple chips. [http://www.avrfreaks.net/index.php?module=Freaks%20Devices&func=viewDev This page at AVRFreaks] has some of the specs and all the datasheets in one place, but it's a bit overwhelming.

A shortlist of the coolest chips includes:

'''Tiny13''' -- Smallest and cheapest. 8 pins, 5 of them useful. 1k program memory. Goes everywhere. Cheaper and more versatile than a 555 IC. Some hardware SPI/I2C support, but it's a pain to write for.

'''Tiny45''' -- Another 8-pin, but with a high-speed PWM clock and 4k of program memory. ~$0.75 from Digikey. Can be made to run at 16MHz+ using its internal oscillator, making firmware USB a reality. Some hardware SPI/I2C support like the Tiny13.

'''Tiny2313''' -- 20 pins. It's the cheapest/smallest unit with > 5 usable pins. Hardware USART makes serial communication (e.g. with your computer) reasonably simple, which can be sweet for debugging or datalogging.

'''Mega 48''' -- 28 pins. All of the bells and whistles, with 4k program memory. 6 ADC channels, buncha timers, SPI/I2C/USART communications. They'll do what you want.

'''Mega 88, 168''' and beyond -- You're writing micro-controller code that requires 16k?!?! Time to learn assembler, parallel out your tasks to a couple chips, or step up to something like an ARM platform, IMO.

Maybe we could do a few group purchases to get up to Digikey's price-break minimums. Interested? E-mail Elliot.

And while you're at the AVRFreaks page, download both the long and short datasheets for whichever chips you end up buying. The short one has a nice pinout diagram on page two, while the long one explains everything you'll ever need to know.

== Misc. Extras ==

You're at least going to need some LED's to go blink. Pushbuttons are nice for playing around with inputs. Photocells give your creations sight. Motors and motor drivers give you legs. I'm sure there's more than enough scrounge around the space to get everyone started.

[http://www.instructables.com/id/Ghetto-Development-Environment This Instructable] details my current setup, and is a good start.

== Background ==

[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(board_game) Go] is a board game of strategy, like chess, that is around 3000 years old and the most popular game of it's type in the world. Before going any further, take a look at the wikipedia page... the short version is that it's an ''extremely'' easy game to learn and for every player to date beyond mastery. No computer or algorithmic approach can beat even a moderately skilled amateur (it's been in the crosshairs of the AI community since chess, a vastly inferior pastime, fell with little resistance) but four year olds are routinely taught to play. Its played on a grid, usually 19x19, but occasionally bigger and frequently smaller for faster or educational games (9x9 and 13x13 being the other standard sizes). The object is for two players to try to surround as much of the board as possible by placing immovable stones on the intersection points of the grid, the central caveat being that stones can be captured if totally surrounded by opposing colored stones. There are maybe two other rules, depending on how you count, but it's beautifully simple.

Games are played ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Go-Equipment-Narrow-Black.png illustrative picture]) on a board called a Goban, traditionally a very thick slab of wood with it's own feet that sat directly on the floor, with players on opposing sides sitting on cushions. These days you're more likely to see a table board, which is still essentially a slab of wood. The stones range from traditional (read: expensive) slate and shell to bottlecaps (glass/plastic coated lead being the most common).

== Concept ==

Many clients exist to play Go on computers/handheld devices. These are wonderful in that they can record your game in the SGF format, which is (near) universally used by players to review their games (an important part of getting better, often done with a teacher or opponent). They're also handy when you're moving around, and can't set up a bunch of slick stones on a slab of wood (trains, planes, automobiles, bicycles). For casual games, it's nice to be able to stop and resume at any time.

The big downside is face to face interaction. It's simply nowhere near as enjoyable to play by passing a handheld back and forth or staring at a computer, the latter not being particularly portable most of the time anyway.

So the plan would be to build something that's as close to the form factor of a real goban, but shrunk a bit for portability, and completely electronic. I'd say about a 30cm square (~1 foot for the unit challenged) and no thicker than a paperback book would be a good size. Something you can throw in a bag without hesitation. It should have as intuitive an interface as possible, the ability to automatically score the game, and best of all store games and export them to a computer somehow.

Of course, it should also have some pointless eastereggs built in... [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway%27s_game_of_life the game of life] springs to mind.

== Implementation Ideas ==

Simply but, a big array of multicolor LEDs, each one an "intersection" on the board. 19^2, 361, of them. A glorious sight to behold. Initially I thought it would be neat to make each LED a pushbutton, but quickly realized that multicolor LED pushbuttons are expensive, make the whole project orders of magnitude more difficult and would be rather fragile (I'd be delighted if someone showed me otherwise though). So the backup plan would be to simply have a big old grid of LEDs and a d-pad (think... nintendo controller) to move around your "stone" on the matrix before placing it. A five button interface, one on each side. If you use Red/Green bicolor LEDs you can get three colors (tricky eh?): Red, Green, and Yellow. I ''think'' [http://www.superbrightleds.com/TriColor%20LED.htm these] are true tricolor LEDs... in the sense that you have one anode (or cathode, your choice) per color (unfortunately they cost way too much, we'll see if they can be found cheaper, something under $0.30 would be nice). The stone you're "placing" would be yellow, and upon pressing would turn your color (based on whose turn it is, obviously). The yellow could also be used to mark the "edge" when playing on a smaller 9x9 or 13x13 board.

This is a project ideally suited for a microcontroller of some sort. They're surprisingly cheap (once you factor in how much it costs to get PIC/AVR prog hardware) and should be very easy to interface to a computer for game data offload. Also, the algorithms for driving this thing will be more sophisticated than I'd want to try to implement on a PIC or AVR. Totally open to ideas here though - I've never done anything with microcontrollers except some robot programming in C with PICs, and then only using an existing framework.

Driving a huge multicolor LED matrix will be... interesting. The normal solution for a monochrome display is, as I understand it, a bunch of shift registers. I guess for this, if you use "true" tricolor LEDs, you'd just need twice as many shift registers. If you use bicolor LEDs, which, as I understand it, achieve the third color by duty cycle trickery (switching between the two colors very rapidly to blend them) I'm not sure how you could accomplish this. Advice needed.
Electrical engineering student, class of 2011, [http://uky.edu University of Kentucky] (Lexington). My blog is at [http://www.phrontist.org phrontist.org] and I spend a lot of time on [http://www.metafilter.com/user/17670 metafilter]. Obligatory facebook [http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=12928991 here]. I'm a web developer and DJ for the best student/community/freeform radio station this side of the Mississippi, [http://wrfl.fm Radio Free Lexington]. I've got dual US/Belgian citizenship and speak dutch, the family business is [http://airphotoslive.com/ tethered-balloon aerial photography]. I'm in during summer break during 2008, and plan to be next summer and most of December and early January as well. I live out in The People's Republic of Falls Church. I ponied up for a key. David Lotts, another HacDC member, was a mentor of my [http://www.usfirst.org/ FIRST] robotics [http://www.team1418.org/ team] in high school. We're both still active, and hope to draw some of the FIRST crowd in to HacDC.

I've got lots of free time this summer, and I'd be happy to help out if you've got things to work on. I come to HacDC with my [[Vast_VU_Meter|Vast VU Meter]] project in progress and the idea of an [[Electronic_Goban|Electronic Goban]].

This is an existing personal project I'm building a prototype for to pitch to my university. I plan to work out the kinks in the HacDC space. I've laid this out pretty thoroughly on [http://www.phrontist.org/?cat=15 my blog]. Here is a quick synopsis:

<blockquote>
I want to take a row of windows (or more, as money allows) in the building and place lamps in them to form a vertical bar VU meter showing the volume of the radio station's broadcast. You could tune in to the station during the evening and watch this huge column of light on the face of <nowiki>[a 22 story building on campus]</nowiki> leap up and down in synchrony with the music. You could tune in to the station during the evening and watch this huge column of light on the face of POT leap up and down in synchrony with the music. The signal we want to represent is already available as radio broadcast on every floor. So instead of switching a huge number of lights from a central system, we can put a radio on each floor and have each set of lights switched autonomously in response to the signal it receives.
</blockquote>

<blockquote>
So the basic plan is to have a simple lamp with, lets say, three 100 watt bulbs in each window. You have a relay that can switch the bulbs on and off quickly in response to a low voltage signal. This signal is provided by a simple circuit that detects how loud the signal coming from the radio is, and while it’s above a certain threshold, activates the relay to turn on the lamps. By setting that threshold slightly higher on each successive floor, you’ll get that VU meter effect.
</blockquote>
